Almost nobody likes the term “fake news.”
The establishment uses the term to refer to misleading information spread on social media.
The establishment does not use the term to refer to war propaganda in the mainstream media.
But there clearly is fake news coming from the mainstream media. To deny that, you’d have to persuade me that the American public could have consulted the media on, say, the housing bubble or the Iraq war and walked away with anything like an accurate view of those things.
So it’s no surprise that 95 percent of Americans are unaware of the astonishing conquest of extreme poverty that’s taking place during our lifetimes — and in fact they generally believe the opposite is occurring.
Not long ago, Americans were asked: do you believe that over the past 20 years the percentage of the world’s population living in extreme poverty has doubled, stayed roughly the same, or been cut in half?
The correct answer: it’s been cut in half.
Some 95 percent of Americans got this wrong. The most momentous achievement in all of world economic history, and Americans don’t even realize it’s taking place.
Nice job, media.
