I can do without the “America is the greatest nation in human history” stuff, which doesn’t sound like Ron Paul’s style at all, but here’s the kind of budget we’d be debating if our wise public servants actually wanted to address the debt and deficit problems.
UPDATE: This budget plan balances the budget in three years. I wonder if it would have been possible to go all the way to a balanced budget in one year; this would have been only marginally more controversial than the proposed plan.
I would have made clearer in this budget that the troops will be coming home from where they are stationed around the world, since this is a central Ron Paul point. This is of course perfectly acceptable to at least a decent chunk of budget-minded Republicans; what are tens of thousands of Americans still doing in Germany, etc.? There is a tendency in some Ron Paul circles to think any military reductions will alienate the GOP base, but there is an excellent populist case to be made for them in language that can resonate with those voters, if only the will is there to make it.
