This is almost funny. Tom Watson, writing at Salon, takes his fellow progressives to task for including libertarians and other people who aren’t clones of themselves in an anti-NSA coalition. Why, why, libertarians oppose “communitarian participation in liberal society” (a delightful euphemism that leaves out the police and the hangmen at the heart of that “participation”).
Then we’re treated to a laundry list of awful things libertarians believe, along with the implicit assumption that everyone will immediately see how crazy they all are. (Not an unreasonable assumption: since most people are educated into government propaganda from age 5, I’d be shocked if they thought otherwise.) Our Salon writer obviously hasn’t the slightest idea why libertarians believe as they do, and has less interest in finding out. He is convinced that all of society must be organized like the military, with an infallible and irresistible voice at the top barking out commands to everyone else. Why, without that, everyone would be dead, starving, poor, we’d have child labor, etc.
