If you haven’t read the proposal for a “Green New Deal” on the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez website, you are probably living a more serene existence than I am.
It’s worse than anything you could dream up if you tried.
The costs it seeks to impose on the economy are beyond calculation, yet the proposal takes for granted that the result will be an economic boon.
So the fact that we have to divert resources from their present, most value-productive uses to saving the planet from destruction (as supporters of the plan believe they are doing) is a good thing?
In other words, if it turned out that climate change weren’t really happening, or simply ceased, this would be bad for the economy?
The Green New Deal proposal is also filled with demands for wealth redistribution, “living-wage jobs,” and “social, economic, racial, regional, and gender-based justice and equality.”
Let’s leave aside the fact that what passes for “social, economic, racial, regional, and gender-based justice and equality” has nothing to do with genuine justice at all. Let’s stipulate for the sake of argument that this isn’t just leftist gobbledygook.
Here’s the point, and here’s how we know they don’t really believe what they’re saying about the imminent end of the world.
If the world were truly about to end, would you really prioritize your social goals, or would you say: look, we have to save the world right now, so on everything else we’ll just have to let the chips fall where they may?
On Contra Krugman — the podcast I co-host once a week with economist Bob Murphy — we take apart the Green New Deal.
