Now understand that the information gathered by the NSA would never, ever be used for political purposes, for blackmail, or for anything else other than keeping “us” “safe.” And even though the federal government has consistently lied about its eavesdropping and information-gathering programs, Americans seem pretty confident that this time it’ll tell us the truth about what’s being gathered and who’s being spied on. And even if the government is lying about this, the public response (or is that non-response?) seems to be “Who cares?”
