In a recent discussion I had with Milo Yiannopoulos, we agreed that a backlash was likely on college campuses against the “safe space,” “trigger-warning” culture of Generation Snowflake.
In particular, we said even some college administrations would take a public stand against them, in order to differentiate themselves from other institutions and attract students who actually wanted to learn and study, rather than scream and intimidate.
Well, it’s happening.
Here are a couple of passages from the letter the University of Chicago is sending to students accepted into the class of 2020 (emphasis mine):
Welcome and congratulations on your acceptance to the college at the University of Chicago. Earning a place in our community of scholars is no small achievement and we are delighted that you selected Chicago to continue your intellectual journey.
Once here you will discover that one of the University of Chicago’s defining characteristics is our commitment to freedom of inquiry and expression.… Members of our community are encouraged to speak, write, listen, challenge, and learn, without fear of censorship. Civility and mutual respect are vital to all of us, and freedom of expression does not mean the freedom to harass or threaten others. You will find that we expect members of our community to be engaged in rigorous debate, discussion, and even disagreement. At times this may challenge you and even cause discomfort.
Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so called “trigger warnings,” we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual “safe spaces” where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.
Boom.
Now I’ll grant: it’s ridiculous to have to make points like this in the first place, but you have to start somewhere.
Meanwhile, I remind you that the Internet is home to the unsafest space of all, where truth mercilessly crushes error, and where your feelings don’t count.
All the stuff the Social Justice Warriors want left out, or would faint if they heard, is there, to be consumed at your convenience.
Want to defeat these enemies of civilization?
