Well, it happened again. Except this time, it was even worse.
Last night our old friend Milo Yiannopoulos had his speech at DePaul University disrupted by a couple delicate flowers.
I myself spoke at DePaul back around 2007, and even then there was a threat of protest, after a leftist professor (who had zero publications of significance, you’ll be astonished to learn) wrote a column in the student newspaper accusing me of being a “white supremacist” — which in non-hysterical language simply meant I was to the right of Bob Dole.
I was ready for them, believe me, but none showed up.
Milo wasn’t so lucky.
In his case, student and “church minister” Edward Ward and a female accomplice jumped onto the stage and began chanting Bernie Sanders slogans. (I’m sure Bernie will issue a statement opposing the students and supporting free speech any minute now.) Milo was also threatened with a punch in the face.
Meanwhile, university security did nothing.
I’m sure if white students had disrupted a lecture by a black speaker, university security would likewise have stood by and done nothing.
Oh, wait.
Although, since such a thing never happens, ever, that theory can’t be tested.
Ward later said, “This is not a point of shutting down free speech, it’s the point of shutting down hate speech.” And guess who gets to decide what constitutes “hate speech”?
Why, church minister Edward Ward, of course. And here’s something else we could never have predicted: “hate speech” turns out to be speech Edward Ward disagrees with.
I’ve head a couple people on Twitter say Milo should have stood up and defended himself physically.
Wrong.
He did exactly the right thing. Let these savages prance around uttering their inanities for the world to see. Don’t let there be any ambiguity about what’s happening. He’s giving a speech, and they’re disrupting it and threatening him with violence.
Oh, don’t share the video and give the protesters more attention, some people say.
Wrong again. We want people to see the video. These people exist to shut others down. That is their goal. The sooner people realize this, and the sooner they understand we aren’t dealing with two sides who should just try to settle their differences rationally, the better.
Speaking of all this: tomorrow’s episode of the Tom Woods Show features Wendy McElroy, author of the new book Rape Culture Hysteria: Fixing the Damage Done to Men and Women.
Better not tell Edward Ward.
Actually, you know what? Bring it on.
